UEA is committed to providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment to all staff, students and visitors and has a zero-tolerance approach towards sexual assault, harassment and bullying.
We believe that everyone has the right to live, work and study in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment and we strive to promote a safe campus and a safe city.
And this is why UEA has signed up to the Neighbourhood Watch Community Safety Charter - to challenge negative behaviour off-campus and to promote a safe culture for everyone.
By signing up to the Charter, UEA are working with the local community to take an active stance against antisocial behaviour, harassment, intimidation and hostility towards others.
The Community Safety Charter empowers everyone to recognise different types of crime, to know what can be done about it, the different ways it can be reported, and to help you understand what support is out there.
Head of Accommodation Services, Paul Bailey was instrumental in signing UEA up to the Charter and told us more about the reasons for doing so:
“Ensuring staff and student safety is a priority for us and that goes beyond time spent on campus. So much of student life here in particular is enhanced by enjoying our fantastic city and living happily and positively alongside other members of the local community.”
“Despite being regularly named as one of the safety cities in the UK, we recognise that things can always be improved and in signing up to this charter we hope to take an active stance against antisocial behaviour harassment, intimidation and hostility towards others, for all members of the community.”
UEA will receive regular training from Neighbourhood Watch on recognising, reporting, and supporting those affected by crime, and methods of crime prevention in the local area. Information and best practice will be shared with everyone at UEA.
If you need help on campus, UEA Security officers are on campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and are ready to deal with any situation. UEA Security officers are easily identifiable across campus; all wear a UEA Security uniform and can provide you with proof of identification if you are unsure.
Contact UEA Security on 01603 592352 for general enquiries, or on 01603 592222 in an emergency, or email security@uea.ac.uk
The SafeZone app is designed to help you feel safer on campus in situations where you might be working late at night or alone early in the morning. SafeZone gets you quick access to UEA Security should you need first aid or urgent help.
The SafeZone app can also be used to provide reassurance if you ever feel vulnerable walking across campus. Simply press the ‘help’ button, and your whereabouts become known to a UEA Security officer who will then meet you and see you safely back to your final campus destination. As soon as assistance is given, your location on the app reverts to private. You can call for help as many times as you need.
Go to safezoneapp.com to download the app to your device.
