A message from Lorna Harper, Deputy Director of the Sainsbury Centre:
It is with great sadness we are sharing the news that our dear friend and colleague Gary Laidlaw passed away on Wednesday 8 May after a short illness.
Gary started work at the UEA in 1994 at the Union Bar as a member of the security team. After a period, Gary moved on to campus security where he made a big impact and made any new staff feel welcome.
Gary joined the Sainsbury Centre Gallery Assistants team in 2006. In his time at the Sainsbury Centre, Gary made a big impact with all the staff and was liked by everyone with in the centre.
Gary will be remembered for his kind heart; he would always take time out to talk to anyone if they were having a bad day, try and cheer them up and make them a cup of tea. The Sainsbury Centre will remember Gary for his special blend of humour and mischief which sometimes got him in trouble.
Gary had a passion and talent for drawing, he was especially talented at drawing caricatures, so no one was safe from having a caricature done of them.
His talent was such that the Sainsbury Centre shop had some of his drawings turned into postcards for the public to buy.
Gary is going to be missed especially by the Gallery Assistants team as he was not just a work colleague, he was a great friend.
