UEA’s first Winter Market, held last Thursday (23 November) on The Street kicked off in good spirits with a busy period of browsing right from the off. The Warren was thriving with jewellery and art makers, while The Street was lined with woodwork designs, baked goods from BrownBread and UEA Shop’s launch of their new seasonal jumper range.
From DIY crafts and wreath making to festive food and jumpers, there was lots on offer for shoppers to peruse amongst the stalls run by students, staff, alumni and Norwich community creators. The festive atmosphere was furthered by carol singers who performed seasonal favourites, and an evening screening of Home Alone in the Square.
As always, Sylvester was the most popular seasonal jumper design, with the brussels sprout design taking second place. Sylvester's owners even managed to pop along and check out the new jumper! The range will now be sold online (UEA Online Store) and in the Kiosk in the Hive.

Nathan McConnell, a PhD research student with UEA’s School of Biological Sciences (BIO), was one of the stallholder attendees at the Winter Market. Among his other artwork on sale, Nathan was also selling his recently self-published children’s book, Disgusting Derek, a book about the ecological importance of dung beetles – told in a humorous manner and featuring a cartoon version of his daughter.
Nathan said: “It was a great night at the Winter Market, and a great opportunity for me to share my book and artwork with others. I had lots of complimentary chats with students, colleagues and other members of the Norwich community while I was there – and even managed to get some extra help selling from my daughter Willow, who features in the Disgusting Derek book!”

Jasmyn Gooding, a fourth year MSci Biological Sciences student at UEA, said: “The Market at UEA has given me the opportunity to sell artwork and t-shirts for my business 'Abyss Studios' right here on campus. It has been such a journey since starting a year ago, but the markets have given me a place to grow and get noticed as an artist. It's always such a fun day and great to meet other small business owners.”
