Dear Colleague,
UEA appoints a new Chancellor
As you may have already seen, the University is delighted to announce the appointment of
Dame Jenny Abramsky
as its new Chancellor. Graduating from UEA in 1968 with a BA in English, Jenny went on to forge an outstanding career in news media, with her near 40-year
legacy at the BBC spanning radio, television, and online platforms.
Joining us as UEA’s 8th Chancellor, Jenny’s career highlights include being the first female editor of the BBC Today programme and launching
Britain's first continuous news and sport radio station, Radio 5 Live, as well as the television channel BBC News 24.
As Chancellor, Jenny will act as a figurehead and ambassador for the University, with formal duties including chairing our annual general
meeting and conferring degrees at graduation ceremonies. I am certain Jenny will provide much inspiration to our community and at our graduation ceremonies this summer. I am greatly looking forward to welcoming Jenny to campus to meet some of you soon.
NSS Survey – deadline approaching
A quick reminder that the latest National Student Survey (NSS) closes on 30 April, so please continue to remind your students to complete it if they have not yet done so.
Last year, around 70% of our students completed the survey and it would be great for this figure to be even higher this year.
The NSS is an annual survey aimed at all final year undergraduate students, which gathers their opinions on the quality of their courses
and helps to inform prospective students’ choices. It is also one of the key measures of success in our Student Education and Experience strategy, as part of Strategy 2030, providing important data to help inform decisions on improving student experience.
The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) is also now open, so please encourage your students, where relevant, to complete this
survey before the closing date on 13th June – information on this is at the link below. This will be the first time in a number of years we have received broad and local insight on the PGT student course experience that can be compared to the sector, so it
is critical that we achieve a strong response rate.

and you can also contact Amy Marsh (amy.marsh@uea.ac.uk)
for a copy of the promotional materials toolkit designed for School use in the promotion of both surveys.
Research events this week
Earlier this week, alongside colleagues from the Faculty of Science, I welcomed a senior delegation from UKRI’s (UK Research and Innovation) Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC) to an online event hosted by UEA.
NERC is the driving force of investment in environmental and associated sciences in the UK, so the meeting
was the perfect opportunity to understand more about funding opportunities, as well as the strategic priorities NERC is considering investing in and how they can align with UEA’s own plans.
I also had the opportunity to speak at UEA’s East of England Tech Collaboration event held on campus. Supported
by Cambridge Tech week, the event was an opportunity to highlight UEA’s excellent research in this field and enable discussions between tech and business leaders about how we can innovate, invest, and grow as a region and build new partnerships for continued
success. It was great to see a large number of experienced investors on campus in the Sainsbury Centre.
