Dear Colleague,
New appointments to UEA’s Senior Leadership Team
As you may have seen in this week’s Lasdun, I am pleased to announce that the University has appointed Prof Olga Tregaskis as Pro-Vice-Chancellor
(PVC) for the Social Sciences Faculty and Prof Kristian Bowles as Dean of Medicine for UEA’s Norwich Medical School.
Prof Tregaskis joined the University in 2011, is currently Head of the Norwich Business School and will
begin
the role of PVC in August this year. Olga brings a wealth of experience to the role and will focus on building on UEA’s research excellence, academic development,
and fostering collaborative networks in line with our Strategy 2030.
Prof Bowles will provide the
strategic direction for the School
of Medicine, leading on the School’s research and teaching targets, and maintaining and developing relationships with our regional and national partners.
Kris brings a huge amount of knowledge and insight, having held leadership roles at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) and taught at UEA’s Medical School since 2006.
Congratulations to both Olga and Kris and I look forward to the invaluable expertise and leadership they will bring to these roles.
Financial update following UEA’s Finance Committee meeting
UEA Council’s latest Finance Committee meeting took place last week and I would like to take this opportunity to update you on our latest financial position.
Meeting regularly over the year and reporting to Council, UEA’s Finance Committee is responsible for making recommendations to Council
for our annual revenue and capital budgets, together with the long-term financial plan, as well as ongoing monitoring to ensure our budgets remain sustainable and financially viable.
The University is still forecasting a £15m deficit for 2023/24, with the ambition of being at zero deficit in just over two years' time
(end of 2025/26 financial year).
I am pleased to report that we remain on track for this year, although we must continue to decrease our deficit position year on year
through general income and expenditure management. Our finances for next year remain as always heavily dependent on our student recruitment round for 2024/25. The current data on home undergraduate student recruitment looks promising, but there is some concern
around the figures for international postgraduate taught.
As I updated you in the last all-staff Forum, plans are underway to ensure all colleagues have an awareness and understanding of the
University's finances. New workshops will provide an opportunity to better understand UEA’s budget cycle and financial terminology, as well as give the latest update on our current and forecast position. There will be more information on how to get involved
in these soon, so please look out for this.
