Two of UEA’s leading innovators have recently had great success with wins in regional competitions.
Cellexcel, a spinout company arising from Emeritus Professor Richard Stephenson’s research in the School of Chemistry, has recently won the regional heat of KPMG’s 11th annual Tech Innovator in the UK competition. They now move on to the national final which takes place on 23 July 2024. Details of the competition can be read at Tech Innovator in the UK.
Rudy Lapeer (Associate Professor in the School of Computing Sciences) recently won the Norwich NHS Health Innovation Sprint. Dr Lapeer, in collaboration with colleagues from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, was the winner with his concept for Birth4Cast: a subject-specific digital twin to prevent adverse childbirth outcomes. Birth4Cast is a VR-based simulation software that will be capable of visualising and simulating a subject-specific childbirth before the actual event to prevent adverse outcomes. If the simulations indicate that natural birth will be problematic then a planned (or elective) Caesarean section (CS) can be decided on, as such avoiding a distinctly riskier emergency CS.
On hearing of both results, Vice Chancellor Professor David Maguire offered many congratulations and well done to all concerned.
APVC for Innovation, Dr Nicola Hancock said: "I am delighted to see this well-deserved recognition for the innovative teams at Cellexcel and Birth4Cast. In their distinctive fields and at different stages of development, both teams exemplify excellence in forging real-world innovation and impact from our research expertise. Well done to all concerned."
