Millions of civilians have been affected by the invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces, and there are many ways in which it’s possible to help. Find out more about these initiatives, including those organised by the UEA community, below.

UEA community initiatives
The Aurora Network, a network of European universities, has created a support programme for its associate partner, V.N Karazin Kharkiv National University in Ukraine. You can now make donations for essential equipment, including laptops, printers, and generators for electricity for their staff and students displaced by the war. To make a donation, use the following account information, making sure you include the description ‘Donations for Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Students from Norwich Medical School at UEA are part of a fundraising project for urgent surgical equipment for Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv and Isida Clinic, Hospital of Ukraine. The team are looking for any functional equipment from a set list or money to help purchase these items. Find out more by visiting their JustGiving page.
UEA Student Action for Refugees (STAR) is a national charity of students welcoming refugees to the UK. Their Facebook page UEA STAR-Student Action for Refugees provides details on fundraising and volunteering initiatives.
The Faith Centre on campus is hosting a reflective space in response to the crisis in Ukraine every Wednesday between 10am and 3pm for all staff and students. People of any or no faith are welcome to come to the centre to reflect, light a candle or pray.
The Sainsbury Centre based on UEA campus is also keen to amplify messages of solidarity with the people of Ukraine and raise awareness of fundraising initiatives to support civilian families. You can find more information on how the Sainsbury Centre is providing support on their website.
CareerCentral provides all students and recent graduates, including those affected by the war in Ukraine, with a facilitative, non-judgemental environment to explore career decisions and next steps. The service is available both on campus and remotely. Please contact Career.central@uea.ac.uk to learn more about the full service for graduates or visit their website. Please note that they cannot advise on Visa’s or offer therapeutic interventions.
Donating money
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. DEC charities and their local partners are in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries providing food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
Cara (the Council for At-Risk Academics) provides urgently-needed help to academics in immediate danger, those forced into exile, and many who choose to work on in their home countries despite serious risks. Cara also supports higher education institutions whose work is at risk or compromised.
The British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal supports people affected by the conflict with supplies of food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter
UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) helps displaced people reach safety and rebuild their lives, from emergency relief for civilians on the front lines of conflict, to delivering healthcare, education and livelihoods for families trapped in limbo when they can’t return home.
Donating essential supplies
New Routes shop: you can donate household items, clothes and toiletries to asylum seekers and refugees living in Norwich, including individuals from Ukraine, by contacting Rasha at the New Routes shop on rashaibrahim@newroutes.org.uk. The shop is at present short of toiletries if you are looking to donate something specific. All items are free to those referred to the shop.
Norwich Homeless Support are requesting donations which will be shipped to the Polish-Ukrainian border. They're also looking for volunteers to help with the efforts. Visit their Facebook page for more information.

Ukraine Advice Project is an organisation providing free UK immigration legal advice for people fleeing Ukraine.
Refugee Action supports refugees and people seeking asylum. Visit their website for useful information on the support they provide and also how you can get involved.
